Take a video camera, computer, some software and the Internet, add in a sense of humor, a smidge of talent, and maybe some luck, and what do you get? If you're in the right place at the right time, and lucky, you get a viral video.
Take Ninja Cat for instance... A kitty that moves without moving. Pretty funny stuff, I've been doing this for years with my cats, but someone videoed it, and uploaded it to the net, added just the right caption and whoosh! It's going viral.
Now, here's another video that's probably more esoteric in nature, appealing to the geekier side of us.
This is along the same lines as the "What really happened" series of videos that made excellent use of green screen footage and the recycling of existing videos:

Okay, first, very few videos are naturally viral, and this is because of the shear number of videos being produced and uploaded on a daily basis. Viral videos, those intended to go viral have a lot of help. Word of mouth, mass emails, ratings, comments and linking back to the video from other sites-- like this. I don't personally know the makers of the videos that I posted here, but I like them, and they serve my purpose of both focusing on and attempting to create viral videos.
If you're really serious about making a video go viral, there's companies to hire for the job. Now, if it's successful enough, and you've got your ads in place, you might break even, or perhaps make enough money to buy better video camera.
If you're in it for the fame, then it's probably more economic to enlist your friends, enemies and family members to help make it viral.
