VLC: The Media Player of All Media Players

You've got RealPlayer, you've got Windows Media Player, you've even got QuickTime, and for some unimaginable, and infuriating reason, you can't play that video file. Instead of struggling to find the right "codec", try VLC.

VLC media player is a free software media player written by the VideoLAN project. What started out originally as a project created by students at the École Centrale Paris, it is now developed by contributors worldwide. .

VLC is an incredibly versatile player that will outrun any of the major players available: not only running hard to play videos, but also allowing the play of incomplete or corrupted videos in some cases. For the tinkering types VLC is customizable both visually and in operation with confrigurable hotkeys.

Depending on the initial quality of your video, you can also easily take good quality screen caps! Yes, that can be done in WMP and RealPlayer with some adjustments to the settings, but in VLC... nada, you don't have to do anything but make a mouse click and viola, screen cap.

VLC is free, safe and ad free. What more could you want? Okay, then, here's a list of VLC's features at the VideoLAN site.

If you're in a jam, and need a sure bet media player-- Go download VLC.
