Windows Irritants: Get rid of drawing box!

Getting rid of that annoying "Create Your Own Drawing Here" box in Windows Word.

You're in the middle of a complex document and you just need to insert a shape-- an arrow, a box, something-- and suddenly a huge box pops up in the middle of your document throwing everything six ways to Sunday. Frustration doesn't begin to cover it. Of course you can make the box go away and everything goes back to the way it was in your document, but needless to say that an extra step and wasted time that a lot of us just don't want to expend. Plus it's just dang annoying!

You probably won't believe how incredibly easy it is to get rid of this thing... Once you find out you'll kick yourself like I did.

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the General tab.
  3. Select or clear the "Automatically create drawing canvas when inserting AutoShapes" check box.
Uh, yeah, it's that easy.
Now, enjoy your document creation and insertion of shapes without the evil "create your own drawing here" box popping up like a Jack-in-the-Box at a bomb defusing party.
